I'm almost tempted to do a song by song review since I could point out something that uniquely pisses me off in each and every one, but most of songs are so samey and follow such a simple pattern anyways that I can comfortably describe most of them for you:. The result is many three-to-four minute songs that all follow a very simple, modern rock pattern psychrlmatic try to cram more ideas than should be in a radio-friendly song.

Psychromatic is a poor album from a band that had massive potential.

Beaten Roads is part brilliant and part ridiculous, and does feature aforementioned screamed vocals, but has surprisingly good riffs and. If the psychromatif continued the path of Flies and Lies, they would have easily rivaled Scar Symmetry. As always, their signature sound is a unique blend of power metal, melodic death metal, and progressive metal--sort of a combination of Rhapsody of Fire, Soilwork, and Dream Theater. It sounds as though all the instruments are coexisting rather than cooperating, and that the various pieces of the songs are all jostling each other for the listener's attention.

Conversely, "I Want to Remember" and "Shift" are both boring, slow ballads that just don't deliver enough melodic appeal to make their existence worthwhile. The shouting vocals were forgivable on otherwise-amazing cuts such as "Apeiron", but they begin to show signs of decay here, as the rest of the band isn't performing up to par.

You have to wonder what the band was thinking when they chose to trash the elements that made their last album great. With this new direction, the band recorded their debut album Tales from Sadness in with Arise Records. Maybe we could chalk that up to production, as overall it seems a tad flat. The vocals are both sung and growled, but this time around the singing voice seems rather thin. The keyboards are tasteful and not out front and center; they're more of a counterpoint.
